In 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks-Rocha founded Black Girls Run to tackle the obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to women runners. They have built a 100% grassroots movement centered around bringing women together both virtually and on-foot through running – to 250,000 members across the USA. You don’t build an empire like this on hope and luck. It takes vision, hard work, passion and belief in your convictions. They have been honored by countless organizations and media outlets including the Toyota Standing O-Vation Award. See here!
This is the first podcast I’ve ever done in front of a live audience, so you will hear some background noise that the microphones pick up from time to time. You’ll have to let me know if you enjoy this setting – I may have to start doing more live shows! This episode may at times sound more like a marriage counseling session than an interview, but that’s exactly what it’s like to build a business with a partner – it’s a marriage filled with ups down and all-arounds.
Today we talk about:
- Toni’s & Ashley’s backgrounds
- How they met
- How & why they started running
- Black Girls Run! The who, what, when, where, why and how
- Advice to people who want to change their lives
- A deep dive into starting a business with your best friend
- Skin color: How to productively embrace our diversity
- And much more
After this interview you will want to Join BGR! which you can do even if you are not African American. Yes, they are focusing on beating a tough stat for the black population – high obesity rates, but all women are welcome to be part of this incredible community. If you find yourself needing something positive, something to help shift your current circumstances, joining BGR! (or just listening to this episode again and again) may be just the thing. As Toni says, “Live unapologetically and be fearless. Happiness is so important. If anything is not making you happy, find it, get rid of it.”
So take that nugget as you finish up your run today. Think about anything that is not bringing you happiness, and make a decision to get rid of it. Because life is about RIGHT NOW! All right everyone – on that note, you know what time it is. It’s time to get out there and run this world! Have a great workout and I’ll see you next week.Tags: ashley hicks, bgr, black girls run, nicole deboom, obesity, running, skirt sports, toni carey, women's running
